Holy Bible, Book Divine

Author: Josué Mora Peña

Is the Bible really the Word of God? Is it really holy and divine? Many doubt because they do not know its Author. It’s like the young lady who bought a novel, began to read it and didn’t like it. She threw it somewhere in her house and forgot about it. But, not many days after, she met the author, a handsome gentleman, they became friends and began to date. Then she remembered the novel which she threw away, looked for it, found it and began to read it again. When she finished reading it, she said: "I have never read a novel so good and interesting as this one". The difference? She knew the author of that make believe story.

There were approximately 40 men who wrote the Bible, in a period of 1600 years, living in different parts of the world. They were inspired by God but not in the sense that a person is inspired to write a poem. God spoke to them in a different way, He "infused" in them His Words and that’s what they wrote.

The purpose of this sermon is to help us read the Bible. We read the Bible to be wise; we believe the Bible to be saved and we live by the Bible, in order to live a holy life. Every person needs to read the Bible with the right perspective. The Bible is not a book; it is the Book, a collection of 66 different books written by different persons about the same issue: God and His love for His creation—you and I.

The reading and meditating of the Bible changes us, it guides us in our daily walking. Psalm 119:105 reads, "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path". If I don’t want to stumble in my Christian life I need to read the Bible, do what it says and obey God’s commands. It is a fact that people who read the Bible have fewer problems in this world. Someone said that if man and woman would read the Bible more, there would not be a need for so many psychiatrists. The Bible is powerful; it has the mind of God. When we read it and do what it says, it transforms us. It is a divine book, it is persuasive, convincing and contagious.

After Jesus resurrected from the grave, He joined two disciples on their way to Emmaus, they did not recognize Him. Jesus explained to them what had just happened with His life. He entered to eat with them and then their eyes were opened and said: "Did not our heart burn within us while he talked with us by the way and while he opened to us the scriptures?" (Luke 24:30-32)

Saint Paul describes the Bible as a weapon: "…take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God." (Ephesians 6:17), and the author of Hebrews says: "For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edge sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart" (4:12). Yes! This Book can make a great difference in your life. Try it, you’ll like it.

The Holy Scriptures should be read, studied and practiced on a daily basis. It is for the poor and for the rich; for the happy and the unhappy; for the wise and the ignorant; it is for the religious person and the nonreligious; it is for you and for me. Are you anxious for something? Read the Bible. You will find spiritual relaxation; are you troubled or sick or suffering? Read the Bible and do what it says. The Bible is so powerful that it will heal you emotionally and spiritually. It will heal your mind, your spirit, your past and it will give you peace of mind. In his book, "Healing the Damaged Emotions", David Seamans gives example after example of people who were healed totally by the reading of the Bible. In that precious Book, you will find the Balm of Gilead that will cure you—but you have to apply it by reading the Word of God.

The Bible will help you to be more like Jesus. Remember, you become what you read. Read trash or junk material, that’s what you’ll become. Read the Scriptures and you will be more like Jesus—more dedicated to God, more consecrated to Him, more spiritual. Submerge yourself into the living water which is Jesus. He said to the Samaritan woman, "But those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life" (John 4:14).

If you’re a believer, a Christian, read and study your Bible. Do it every day. Jesus is the Bread of Life and you can only find Him in the Holy Bible. The most common sin among Christians is to have a Bible and not read it. It is like saying to God: "I don’t need Your Book, I don’t need Your advice, I can manage myself". Don’t fall into that sin. Nurture yourself and your family with the Word of God. Nowadays we don’t have an excuse for not reading the Bible. They come in all sizes; there are Bibles for the blind, the Braille Bible; there are Bibles in CDs and cassettes, for the people on the go. You can read (listen to) your Bible while driving. If you’re reading this and you are not a Christian, why not? This is the opportunity God has given you to forgive your sins and for Jesus to enter into your heart. Jus pray to Him and He will save you from eternal damnation.

Oh yes, Holy Bible, Book Divine. You need to experience the joy it produces; the satisfaction you get by being in contact with the Most High, with God himself, by knowing that He loves you and cares for you regardless of what you are, what you have done in the past, even what you will do and say tomorrow. He still will love you, because He is God and outside of him there is no one else. Read the Bible today, tomorrow and every day, always. Make the Book your daily companion, you will not regret it. For many years, the Bible competed with the best sellers. It always was #1 in reading, production, sales, so the company decided that the Bible should not compete anymore. It is the Book most read all over the world, most translated into many other languages and dialects. This Book, my friend, will keep you from sinning or sin will keep your from reading it.

The Bible will make you successful in life. Just read Joshua 1:8 and do what it tells you. Listen to what it says: "This book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth; you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to act in accordance with all that is written in it. For then you shall make your way prosperous and then you shall be successful".

There’s so much to say about this Holy Bible, Book Divine. At another time I will elaborate more about it. In the meantime, if you are new to this Book, begin reading the New Testament, especially the Gospel of John, but read also from the very beginning. The more you read the Bible, the more you’ll love God; the more you love God; the more He’ll bless you; the more He blesses you, the more you will want to serve Him. It’s like a love letter—Read it over and over and over again.
