Quo Vadis? (Where Are You Going?)

Author: Josué Mora Peña

At the beginning of the first persecution by Nero, in Rome, in the year 64AD, the Apostle Peter was living there. According to tradition, his friends urged him to save himself. So he fled from Rome through the Appian Way. During the night he had a vision. He met Jesus. Surprised, Peter asked Him, Quo Vadis? Jesus answered, "I’m going to Rome to be crucified again." Peter felt so ashamed of himself that he returned to Rome. When he was taken prisoner, he asked to be crucified upside down. He didn’t feel worthy to die the way Jesus did.

What about you? Quo Vadis? We all go somewhere, though some really don’t know where they are going. Children and youth go to school, adults go to work; other go shopping, on vacation, many people go to church, etc., etc. It is good to know where we are going in this life because, believe it or not, we are going somewhere.

In the Gospel of John, chapter 14, verses 1-6, we have comforting words by Jesus to His disciples and of course, to us today. When Thomas told Jesus, "We don’t know where you’re going" Jesus responded, "I am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father but by me." With these words, Jesus was telling His followers that the only way to get to heaven is through Him, who is the Son of God.

Some people travel the road to perdition, but others to salvation. Proverbs 16:25 says, "There is a way that seems right unto man, but the end thereof are the ways of death." Do you know where you are going? Are you now where you decided to be 5 or 10 years ago? Many people today are not. They think they are going somewhere, but actually they have been going in circles, around and around, without getting anywhere. Others are lost in this world without knowing where they are going. The world looks to them like a labyrinth. They don’t have an idea where they are heading to. Are you one of them?

There are still others who think they are going where they want to go but in reality they are not. Come to mind the story of Jim Marshall, in the United States, back in the year 1964. He was playing football for the 49ers against the Vikings. He got the ball and started running. You should have seen that crowd. Every body stood up, waved their arms, cried out like never before…and of course all this shouting and cheering was like an incentive for Jim. So he kept on running until finally, he scored…for the opposing team. You see, he ran and ran he did, but in the wrong direction. Be careful, it can happen to anyone. As we travel in this world, it is dangerous not to know where we’re running to. Sometimes we think we are heaven bound when in reality we are not. Remember Christopher Columbus? He thought he was going to India but ended up in America.

There is an interesting story in the Bible. God told Abraham to go. Didn’t tell him where, just go and he went. He knew God was with him and that’s what counts. You know…it pays to be obedient to God. Eventually, God told him where to go. He showed him all the land he would possess.

The situation in the world today is going from bad to worse. There are wars and rumors of wars, famine, earthquakes, pestilence and crime everywhere. The world seems to be upside down and this is Bible prophecy written many years ago. These things will continue until Jesus comes again and finish with the Devil, who is the deceiver.

What about you? Do you know where you’re going? Are you traveling the road to success? to your dreams? to become what you really want to be in this life? Unfortunately, many are going toward failure and the worst part of it is that they don’t know it. Some people think they know it all when they don’t know anything.

Whatever your situation, whichever road you’re taking, even if it’s the road to perdition, God can change the direction of your destiny if you let Him. Joshua told the people of Israel in the Book of Joshua, chapter 24:15 "Choose you this day who ye will serve…as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." So it is up to you which direction you want to take in this world. God wants you to travel the road which will take you to heaven. He wants you to live. He told the Hebrew people: "I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that you and your seed may live" Deuteronomy 30:19.

So, Quo Vadis? It is up to you to decide. Just make sure you don’t take the road to secularism, pessimism, conformism around you. The best part of all is we can start all over again, traveling the road that leads to eternal life with Jesus.
